Very unusual strong beer which is difficult to find in the UK, but is reasonably common in its native France.

It has a distinctive peaty, smokey flavour, thanks to the use of Scotch Whisky ingredients in its brewing!

"First tasted in Wisconsin in the early 80"s. I sold it in Detroit and Ann Arbor Mich in 1995. Went to France and enjoyed it in 2000. Unable to get it in the U.S. anymore. Great beer, to be enjoyed after a hard day's work as a reward. To me it is a special occasion beer. If it is available in Montreal or Toronto, let me know. With the infusion of very good Belgium triples coming over, I would hope Fischer's brewery would start sending it again. I know a number of people in the Ann Arbor Michigan area that would enjoy this type of beer."
Jim Wood, Ann Arbor, Michigan, October 25, 2004

Brewed in San Francisco, Anchor Steam can be found in the UK and it is worth the search.

"Excellent brew, but not brewed with steam. The origin of its name is from the very active fermentation of lager yeast at room temperature. Thus when the wooden kegs were tapped in the old days, the initial opening resulted in "steam".
Oli, Santa Cruz, California, USA

It is hard to put your finger on what is so special about James Boag's Premium lager beer. It just has a tremendous balance and clean flavour - wonderful.

It's worth getting a supply sent all the way from Tasmania! (Actually you can get it online in the UK.)

Brewed in Brugge in Belgium, a chilled Brugse Blond on a hot day is just heaven!

The American one (not The Czech Budweiser) seems to be conquering the world along with Miller.

It is light (in both colour and taste) with a rather insipid flavour. On a hot day, I'd grab an ice cold Bud willingly... but only if there was absolutely nothing else available!

Order Budweiser at online prices!

This is the real Budweiser! The Czech Budweiser (you know, the Budweiser that actually has some flavour)! The Czechs know how to make beer and this is one of the best.

Get the outstanding Budweiser Budvar right now at online prices.

"Budvar... now you're talking real beer."
Smithy, Aberdeen

You can also get Budweiser Budvar's Dark Lager occasionally in this country. Very good it is too. You get the taste of roasted malt giving a slightly caramel aftertaste. Last found in Oddbins.

The Danes are famous for butter, bacon and.... beer! Carlsberg! Get your Carlsberg order in now online.

Why drink British or US beer or lager with an Indian meal when you can have the real thing - Cobra Indian beer!

A great Mexican beer. For a touch of authenticity try it with a slice of lime. Order your Corona Extra online now.

Catalan beer and very good it is too. Pop into a Barcelona supermarket and buy a six pack and just weep at the price (it's so cheap!).

The Ozzies are famous for their beers like VB (Victoria Bitter, pronounced "Vay Bay"), but the one that is best known worldwide is Fosters! Get your Fosters now, delivered to your door!

"Great Lakes is a brewing company that carries quite a versatile selection of beers. All of them have won many an award and the greatest way to experience the bulk of it is the sampler pack. Many of the brews are seasonal and thus are not always readily available but those that are should not be overlooked. Every beverage produced by great lakes is of great quality, flavour, texture, and they even offer what foods should be eaten while drinking each delicious beer. A must try for anyone who loves a good selection and great taste."
ElPresidente, Pittsburgh, May 10, 2005

Grolsh became famous for its green swing top bottle, but more normally now comes in standard bottles and cans. But the taste is the same! Get your Grolsch online.

Great... but ONLY if it is the genuine Dutch-brewed item! With the British Whitbread-brewed Heineken phased out, that should be the case for all Heineken in the UK! Buy your genuine Heineken online now.

Probably the best-known of the Belgian "white beers", Hoegarden is slightly cloudy with the white yeast remaining from secondary fermentation and its distinctive flavour is enhanced by the subtle addition of corriander.

Holsten Pils is the distinctive golden German beer with a refreshing taste.

"Quite amazing - the best beer you will ever taste. Edinburgh ale matured for 30 days in American white oak casks (casks are then used for whisky) is then matured for a further 47 days. Natural carbonation - not added gas. Taste: Vanilla/toffee. Strength - 6.6% ABV Availability: 330ml bottles cost £1.60 from ASDA/Sainsbury/Safeway. Once you have tried this - you will never ever drink" Lerxst, Aberdeen

Kozel is a very palatable Czech lager beer. Pleasantly bitter taste, malt and aromatic hops. It has a black lager sibling which is really good but I cannot find it in the UK, even online. However, you can get this Kozel online right now!

Kronenbourg, France's premier beer comes with a clean taste and fresh flavour.

This Belgian beer brings the sun out on a cold damp winter day in Brussels... or anywhere for that matter! A dark beer it has a treakley, fruity flavour yet manages to remain lighter than most dark beers.

In Belgium you are quite likely to be asked for a shoe before you get your Kwak. The reason is that it is served in a rather nifty glass that looks, for all the world, like a stubby bulb-bottomed, yard-of-ale glass. This sits in a wooden holder which you can pick up like a tankard.

You only get your shoe back when the landlord gets his glass back!

A strong 6.5% but very flavourful aromatic blond. Ideally drunk cold from the proper Leffe glass, of course.

The brune, or brown Leffe, is less common but wonderful. It's strong too at 6.5% but it is delicious. Order Leffe Brune online now.

What's the fascination with Miller Genuine Draft or MGD? Of the two big US beers - the other being Bud - it's by far the more preferable. But here in Europe we have a huge variety of exciting, tastier, world-class beers.

"I disagree. I like it and I like its taste!"
John, Stonehaven

See Peroni Nastro Azzuro below.

Most Mexican beers are light and amber. This - as the "negra" might suggest - is a dark Mexican beer. Wonderfully tasty too.

Named, I am assured, after an old MG racing car, this is one really tasty real ale from England. Some serve it warm, but I like it slightly chilled. Buy Old Speckled Hen at online prices!

An excellent Dutch lager beer which is available everywhere in the Netherlands, Oranjeboom is not as easy to find in the UK as it used to be... sadly.

There's just a little hint of citrus to the flavour thanks, I believe, to the addition of some orange zest to the brewing process.

Get your Oranjeboom right now online!

Whether the blonde or the brun Pelican is wonderful - especially after a day out in its native France!

What else can you drink with Italian food... or just on its own? A light but flavoursome beer. You can order your Peroni Nastro Azzuro online.

Makes great play that it is the original Pilsner from the Czech Republic. Personally I prefer Budweiser Budvar a tad. But Pilsner Urquell is magnificent. Order your Pilsner Urquell online now.

Wonderful dark ale from the Isle of Skye.

An enduring Spanish favourite with an excellently balanced flavour. Order your San Miguel right now... delivered to your door!

Sam Adams, Brewer and Patriot, still has his name on the one mass-market American beer that really is worth searching out. Slightly darker than the usual lager-style American beers.

Slightly darker and slightly more bitter than your average American beer. But all the better for it.

All the way from Tadcaster in Yorkshire, Samuel Smith's Organic Pale Ale has a wonderful fruity aroma and just as tantalising a taste.
