The Albyn

Your comments

"Had a great experience at the Albyn. I was there for an anniversary celebration with 7 friends and the food, service and atmosphere were great. As it was a Friday they had a live band on which was great as it meant we did not have to move all night and enjoyed some dancing and people watching as well! Would highly recommend and will definitly be back."
Happyeater, Aberdeen - 21 October 2009

"Having dined at the Albyn last year and had a brilliant time with impeccable service, I booked the restaurant again for a birthday celebtration and took 9 family and friends along. The restaurant was busy and had a great atmosphere, we were unfortunately restricted to a set menu because we were over 10 but the choice was still reasonable. The service initially was great but it all started to go downhill when the main courses arrived... except mine! Dessert orders were taken and again... one was missing. After that, the staff seemed to disappear. We tried for a good 15 - 20 mins to get someone's attention so we could get our bill. Eventually, we managed to get the attention of what seemed to be the only person serving in the restaurant, got the bill which was reasonable. It was 1st class the last time we went so not sure what happened this time... maybe just a bad night but at those prices, we won't be chancing our luck again."
The Wee Lassie, Aberdeen - May 26, 2008

"This restaurant/Bar/Club has been open for some time now, however, we've never really considered trying it. Went for lunch a few weeks ago and I am now a regular! The pasta dishes are so full of flavour and cooked to perfection, something that regularly spoils pasta is overcooking by some restaurants. The battered fish and home cut chunky fries are the finest in Aberdeen. (Even better than Ferryhill House!!) We are just about to go for lunch now, and guess where?"

The Ashvale

Great Western Road, Aberdeen

We were contacted by angry Ashvale fans from as far afield as Switzerland and California demanding why The Ashvale was not originally listed. This award-winning restaurant serves traditional fish and chips, with the option of steaks and other 'catch-alls' for land lubbers.

If traditional deep fried British fish and chips are your desire, this is one of the best places in the UK.

Why did we not list it before? Simply that deep fried British fish and chips are not particularly our desire for eating out of an evening. For take away, well... that's a different matter... that's when we DO got to the Ashvale!!

Your comments

"For a downhome experience and the best fish and chips in the country, Ashvale's is the place. The deep fried haggis balls are an excellent starter here, and the sticky toffee pudding is very good. The Jumbo Haddock and the 6 oz. Cod are the best on the menu. For adventurous types, they can go for the 1 lb. cod, affectionately termed 'The Whale'. The staff are a little overworked, but efficient. The restaurant itself is built for the working class, but all clientele will enjoy the experience."

La Bamba (Mexican)*****

Crown Terrace, Aberdeen | www.labamba.biz | Telephone 01224 590088

La Bamba dominated the poll on this site for the first TWO years in succession. Mexican and Border Town food, Mexican beer (if you like dark beer ask for Negra Modelo - dark, but not bitter) and a real fun atmosphere are the ingredients for this excellent restaurant.

It's moved a couple of doors along from its original location, but the style is very much the same. It is bigger, but still a busy place so you may need to book. Be quite clear, this is not the place for a quiet intimate dinner. This is a very lifely restaurant and every night seems to be party night.

The nachos or jalapeno poppers are great for starters, the beef fajitas come particularly recommended as a main course.

We can't get enough of this place... thank goodness Aberdeen now has a Mexican restaurant of which we can be proud! The only disappointment is to find that added 10% service is in the small print.

"Lovely food spoiled by the service. Not sure what exactly the requirements for getting a basket of bread were but folks at all the other tables round us seemed to get automatically while we experienced a very long, hungry wait for our food. Courses on the board weren't available and the waitress didn't bother advising us until she came to take the order. Our meal was really good when it arrived and we intended on having sweets and coffee. The waitress then proceeded to disappear back to the bar to eat and talk rather than taking our order. Needless to say we paid and left."

The Black Olive***

Queen's Road, Aberdeen | www.olive-tree.co.uk | Telephone 01224 208877

The glass building next to the Olive Tree restaurant is The Black Olive, which serves bistro style food.

Blue Moon (Indian)****

11 Holburn Street, Aberdeen | www.bluemoon-aberdeen.com | Telephone 01224 589977

The Blue Moon is located in Holburn Street just a couple of doors down from Holburn Junction at the west end of Union Street in Aberdeen. The first thing that strikes you is how the Blue Moon breaks away from the stereotypical Indian restaurant decor and music.

It's a colourful, informal setting. Being quite a narrow former shop, the tables are lined against either wall so this is perhaps not the most secluded restaurant for a romantic dinner for two - but that's not what most people would expect from an Indian restaurant.

The service is attentive, the choice is wide and varied, the food is good and the Kingfisher Indian beer is cold. What more could you want from an Indian restaurant?

Boars Head Restaurant *****

Kinmuck, Near Inverurie | www.theboars-head.co.uk | Telephone 01224 791235

An old country pub on the Fintray to Keithhall Road near Kintore and Inverurie. Offers bar meals and a la carte dining. Open six days Tuesday to Sunday, details on website.

Borsalino ****

North Deeside Road, Peterculter, Aberdeen | Telephone 01224 732902

Quite a long way out from the centre of town, but easy to find by car, this little Italian restaurant is in the Peterculter area of Aberdeen.

To get there, head out the A93 Braemar road, through Cults, Bieldside, Milltimber and then Culter. Borsalino is on the left just after the Rob Roy bridge - as you leave Peterculter, heading to Banchory.

The restaurant is in an unusual wooden building. This wood lined interior adds to the unique character and informality of the dining room. The food is good authentic Italian cuisine. We can particularly recommend pastas and the pizzas.

"We went in a large family group 8 adults and 2 children to this family-friendly restaurant. It was almost empty but after we had ordered the server (who was very helpful and clearly embarrassed about our poor experience) told us three of the main courses where not available. Two members of our group ordered the same chicken dish both when they came were inedible (thought they had been left on the hot plate too long). We asked for replacements one was okay the other was still inedible so that person, who was so fed up by this time, ended up eating nothing."

The Broadstraik Inn****

Elrick, Westhill, Aberdeen | Telephone 01224 743217

The Broadstraik Inn has been a popular eatery on the west side of Aberdeen for may years. This may have the merest passing resemblance to the chains of food-serving pubs that have sprung up all over the country. But not only is the Broadstraik more genuine (that is a real old pub that has been extended, rather than a modern building made to look like an old pub) but the welcome was more like a restaurant.

The food choice was good and every one of us in our party of four was delighted with the quality of our Saturday lunches. Adding to our delight was the note at the bottom of the menu that listed the local suppliers that the Broadstraik uses. The meat, for example, had come from Paul Smith, the family butcher less than half a mile away. That added to our pleasure of supporting local businesses offering very high standards.

Bugles

West High Street, Inverurie

In the bar-food style of catering, Bugles is a popular eatery in the centre of Inverurie. The food was of the standard you would expect from the decor - filling rather than tantalising the palate. Added amusement is created by the plethora of signs laying down the law about what you can and cannot do in the restaurant!

Your comments

"Bugles is 'our local' as it does really good pub-style food. The food isn't 5 star, however its decent enough and is filling so excellent for family dining. The service is always good with polite, attentive staff. Dress is casual so its a great place to stop off at if on your way back from somewhere. Ask to sit in the conservatory as this is much nicer than the dimly lit back parts."

Cafe 52

52 The Green, Aberdeen

Your comments

"After Howies, this is my favourite restaurant in Aberdeen. The food and service are consistently brilliant and the ambience is chilled and cosy. The staff are friendly and always pleased to see you. I only wish the lunch menu would change more often and incorporate more juicy dishes. If i wanted soup and a sandwich i would head round the corner to La Bonne Baguette. I know the team at Cafe 52 have more imagination so lets see what they do. Thats my only gripe......if you could call it one."
Leela, Aberdeen - June 24, 2007

"I stumbled across Cafe 52 2 years ago and have been back for every special occasion since. The food is utterly fantastic with a highly imaginative menu, the combination of flavours in every dish leave you wondering why you didn't know about it before. The desserts however are the piece de resistance and despite the slightly disappointing lack of chocolate based puds they are always a mouth watering delight. Besides eating a slab of chocolate after licking your substantial starter and main course clean probably isn't a good thing!

Cafe Boheme

Windmill Brae, Aberdeen

Your comments

"The restaurant has great character in terms of their food, quality of service and decoration. Staff are friendly and always work with smiles. Just from the look of their faces you can tell that they are proud of their restaurant and the food they serve. Great value for early dinner menu. Only around £16 for a 3 course meal, but of surprising quality, both in appearance and taste. I will bring my parents to this restaurant when they come to visit me."

In the former Les Amis premises, in Justice Mill Lane right in the west end of Aberdeen.

Your comments

"The cafe is still undergoing some work, most noticeable by the loud drill and scaffolding in front on the walk. The drill was quite a conversation killer. However, this should be gone in due time. Our order was not submitted to the kitchen correctly and it was some time before our starters were served. In the meantime, the owner offered us complimentary olives and bread due to the mistake, and this without a complaint from us.

"The starters, once served, were the pan-fried tiger prawns and the fois grais. Both were delectable in taste and presentation. Our mains consisted of the salmon special and the dover sole. Both were very good, and the potatoes and broccoli/carrot vegetable dishes were fresh and delicious.

"The menu is limited in scope. All of the steak mains only came with chips, and only one dish included chicken, albeit this was not the main ingredient. Guinea fowl, lamb, venison, and rabbit were the other meats available in plentiful supply. The decor was nice, and the service was adequate. Alas, we ate so much there was no room left for dessert. This restaurant is good, and deserves a repeat try."

Carmelite Hotel***

7 Stirling Street, Aberdeen AB11 6JU

The restaurant in the Carmelite Hotel, right in the centre of Aberdeen, within easy walking distance of the station andthe main shopping malls. I felt the restaurant was almost too minamalist. I prefer an ambience that is a bit special.

That said the food was good and the service friendly, although there was one false start with the wrong starter and mustard had to be requested for the steaks (most restaurants would offer). The price of just over £30 per person for two courses, including steaks, coffee and wine, seemed reasonable.

Carmines (Italian)****

Union Terrace, Aberdeen | Telephone 01224 624145

Open only until 7.30pm (closed Mondays), Carmines is a tiny, cramped hole-in-the-wall cafe with a wonderful, unpretentious Italian café atmosphere.

Here, the owner berates and teases his guests (with good humour!). Occasionally he even bursts into song while cooking! (Particularly memorable was the gentle teasing of a friend with a broken wrist, struggling to eat his pizza. But, heart of gold - the owner whisked the pizza away and returned it in a jiffy, cut it into fork sized pieces!)

The food is simple, pizzas and pasta rule - but excellent. We particularly like the pizzas which are more authentic Italian than any pizza chain could produce!

Seating being very limited, booking is possible, but don't be surprised if you are still told "five minutes" when you arrive and you are invited to wait out on the pavement! (But beware, Mr Carmine's "five minutes" can prove quite elastic!)

The restaurant has no licence but you can take your own wine to drink with the meal.

Your comments

"Absolutely the best for pizzas in the world. I have been going there for 20 years.....right after he opened. Carmine is one of the nicest restaurant owners I have ever come accross. He always has a smile for everyone and I love his sense of humour. I couldn't tell you what his pasta or lasagne tastes like because I ordered a Montanara Pizza when I first went and have never been allowed anything else. He has my pizza in the oven as soon as I walk in....I love it. Everyone I have brought there loves the food and they have tasted the rest of the menu.
Chunky, Inverbervie - July 11, 2007

"Carmines food is delicious we have been going since he opened. But the last time he overstepped the mark into rudeness which was very dissapointing because we were very regular customers. Since then we havent been back."

"Excellent Italian Restaurant! This restaurant came highly recommended to me and I have been back many times. All dishes are freshly prepared from scratch and are truly delicious. Staff are friendly and attentive and nothing is too much trouble for them. The highlight is the owner (from Sicily) singing Italian songs (Editor's note - see above, he has now sold the restaurant) in the restaurant to entertain the customers!! Only bad point is that booking is essential for the weekend. 5 stars!"

"Very new restaurant situated inside Castle Fraser (NTS property) and privately run by the people from Cafe Kintore (french restaurant). Very good quality fine dining food served in amazing surrounding, if u can get a table go for it. I predict that in few month u will ave no chance to get a table due to the attention is going to get in the press. By the way u ave to bring your own wine. The waiting staff was young but very efficient and price very low for a set menu about 25 pound i think.

Chinatown (Chinese)*****

Dee Street, Aberdeen | Telephone 01224 211111

Just a few paces off Union Street, Chinatown features attractive modern decor on split levels.

The service is very attentive and friendly. On the night we were there we were in a large party who chose one of the Chinese buffets. This is an ideal way to sample different starters, which included Satay Chicken, spring rolls and ribs. This was followed by excellent aromatic duck. The main courses in our selection were beef and pepper in black bean sauce and a mouth-watering sweet and sour pork.

A rather nice touch was the offer of either flat plates with knife and fork, or rice bowls and chopsticks for those more adept members of the group.

Chiquitos (Mexican)***

Queen's Links Leisure Park, Aberdeen Beach and Union Square, Guild Street, Aberdeen

A reasonably good fast-food diner with a Mexican flavour. Portions are generous so it scores on quantity. Quality? Well, on a good night it is brilliant, but sometimes it is just good. But then, that's a pretty good average!

Pretty good for a quick, reasonably priced chain (it is owned by City Centre Restaurants, who also operate Frankie & Benny's and Cafe Uno).

Christos Greek Taverna (Greek)*****

14/20 John Street, Aberdeen | www.christos-taverna.com | Telephone 01224 636320

Although the traditional plate smashing has been stopped at the behest of the Health & Safety Executive, Christos manages to bring a bit of Greek Taverna atmosphere to Aberdeen. The grapevine overhead may be plastic but the food most definitely isn't!

Greek Mythos beer adds to the authenticity of our experience and the wine menu has a reasonable range of Greek wines, even if some are clearly labelled "Chateau ASDA".

The starters are served either individually or as meze where you sample a few. We particularly enjoyed the wonderfully creamy Tiropitta (feta cheese in layers of filo pastry) and the Horiatiki - a village salad with tomatoes, onions, olives, feta cheese and dressing.

For main course the Souvlaki (skewered lamb and vegetables with pitta bread and tzatziki) and Yiouvetsi (lamb, with tomato, garlic and Greek rice-style pasta) come recommended.

Your comments

"As it says outside 'a little bit of Greece in Aberdeen'. The food is the best greek food I have tasted outside Greece and the hospitality is outstanding. I shall be back again and again.
Mary Ashton, Tidworth - December 14, 2007

"We visited Christos Greek Taverna for the first time on valentines night, we were very impressed with the service which was both friendly and efficient, making us feel welcome as soon as we entered the restaurant. The food was first class, i would go as far as to say probably the best i've had in Aberdeen to date. Now last but not least value for money, we were pleasantly pleased when we recieved the bill, we had for starter.... Flogeres (Feta cheese wrapped in ham and fillo pastry, coated in Kefalotiri and fried). Garithes Yiouvetsi (Prawns cooked with garlic , tomato, onion and herb sauce and topped with feta cheese). Main course.... Kokkinisto (Lamb cooked in a delicious, tomato wine and cinnamon sauce). Sofrito (Succulent slice of beef in a tasty onion, garlic and white wine sauce. Served with rice). dessert.... Revani (Hot sponge cake served with vanilla ice cream) Afrodite (Exotic Mango and Raspberry sorbet). Two lagers and two lager shandys. The bill came to £36.55p Combine this with the friendly atmosphere and excelent food, and in my eyes you have a winner. Top class."

"The food here is out of this world, I have been there several times and have had no complaints about anything. The staff are very efficient and friendly. Food is devine. and the waiter always recommends a good wine everytime. Always a pleasure dining here."
LM, Aberdeen - November 25, 2008

"I was there with a few girlfriends the other week to celebrate my birthday. The food was alright, it's the staff I had a problem with - we thought them a bit sleazy, repeatedly looking at us up and down and one of the waitors, who smelt of booze, tried to kiss me at the end!!"
Mairi, Aberdeen - May 13, 2008

"Agree with the comments already posted. We were told it was a lovely restaurant, so decided to book a table when our favourite italian 'Little Italy' was fully booked. We were totally disappointed!! The food had hidden ingredients that weren't mentioned on the menu e.g. bruschetta consisted of bread smeared with pesto! My fiance doesn't like pesto! On the whole the food was luke warm, had no real taste and for the price we paid we expected a little more than standard pub food!"

The Cults Hotel

North Deeside Road, Cults, Aberdeen

"I go to Cults Hotel quite regularly, absolutely beautiful food! Nice cosy setting, can be casual or otherwise, i never feel like I'm over/under dressed for the occasion! Extensive menu with lots to choose from, service always excellent - polite and efficient. Would highly recommend the chicken cranachan - to die for! I would definitely call the Cults Hotel value for money as the food is always beautiful!"
Laura, Aberdeen – December 10, 2009

"Went for a meal on Sunday 19th July. Ordered steak pie, meat tough and uneatable, complained to the staff, offered another meal, chose roast beef, also tough and barly eatable. However as i had complained about the first meal i felt uneasy complaining about the second and did my best to eat it,left most of the beef, The waiter then told me i had to pay for one of the meals as I had eaten some of it, as i was with guests I did not want to argue in front of them and the other diners so I agreed to pay for it. In my opinion also very pricey for what you get."

Derbar (Indian)

High Street, Banchory

Your comments

"Derbar on the High Street in Banchory is in my view the best Indian restaruant in Aberdeenshire! I have been to many as well. It is very popular and it is usually better to book a table to ensure you can get one. I prefer hotter curries and they do one called Everest chicken which is just so good! Sometimes taste of hot curries can be overpowered by heat but not here! Only gripe I would have is that the rice portions are small. The naan breads are superb as well. Can highly recommend the place. In fact we now say we are 'going for a Derbar' instead of curry it is held in so high esteem!"

Dizzy's ***

Carden Place, Aberdeen | Telephone 01224 625577

I used to think the name was inspired by Benjamin Disraeli, now I wonder if it is Dizzy Gillespie.

Whatever, Dizzy's has been a popular diner at Queen's Cross for a long time.

Originally it was in the basement of No 1 Queen's Cross - the George Washington Wilson house which is now the Clydesdale Bank. Since then it has migrated just across the road into Carden Place.

Good food, good atmosphere and a West End location is Dizzy's successful formula.

Your comments

"Hi. I notice you are wondering who Dizzy was? I used to live in Aberdeen, and one of our favourites was Dizzy's. It was run by Carol (Frank Lefevre's sister - a delightful lady). When it was opened (nearly 30 yrs ago - blimey i am getting old!) it was named after Disraeli (PM)...there were old pics of him on the walls. It was a very cool place in it's time.PS: Hi Greg and Wendy!"

Eat on the Green*****

Udny Green, Udny | www.eatonthegreen.co.uk | Tel 01651 842337

A family run restaurant in the lovely setting of Udny Green, between Inverurie and Ellon. Eat on the Green specialises in fine food, imaginatively prepared and beautifully presented. Eat on the Green is open Wednesday to Sunday for lunches and dinner.

Fennel

10 Burn Lane, Inverurie | www.fennelrestaurant.co.uk

Your comments

"The dining experience at this wonderful little jewel was fabulous. The initial feeling was very boutique and stylish. We were shown to our seats by very pleasant and attentive staff and presented with a menu that was hard to make a choice from. I am awkward to please and quite fussy about food, but this was a rare occasion where I could not find fault with anything, my steak was delicious and cooked as it should be.

"We had to wait for each course but when everything is cooked fresh it is to be expected, dining is an experience to be savoured and not rushed so a little wait between courses is acceptable and allows you time to digest your food. It was also very nice to feel that we were not being rushed. So many eating places want to feed you and get you out of the door so that they can get the next diner in, not at Fennel, I think the staff would have been happy for us to stay all evening which is very refreshing and unusual.

"The ambiance is lovely, huge big glass windows give this restaurant a European feel, very chic and stylish. The bill was reasonable for what we had, everything was fresh right down to the last mushroom, no vaccuum packed products or plastic tasting veg in this place. If you like good quality food that is fresh and local then give Fennel a try, like me and hubby, you will not be disappointed."

The Foyer*****

82a Crown Street, Aberdeen | www.aberdeenfoyer.com | Telephone 01224 582277

Run by Aberdeen Foyer, a local charitable organisation, The Foyer restaurant - right in the heart of Aberdeen in Crown Street - is a firm favourite with business people and shoppers alike at lunchtimes and is also a regular evening dinner venue.

It is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9.30 am to 10 pm. The profit generated by the restaurant and gallery is used to support Aberdeen Foyer's work with disadvantaged young people.

The Filling Station**

Union Street, Aberdeen

This restaurant could probably be summed up in one line. Pretty much what you would expect from a British interpretation of an American diner.

The decor has the usual mixture of junk and nostalgic gems (particularly old petrol pump and oil paraphernalia) peppered around the place. The food is the usual mixture of burgers and the US re-inventions of ethnic foods brought into the States by immigrants from Europe (pizza & pasta) and Mexico (chillies and tortillas).

The overall result is good typical, unpretentious and reasonably tasty diner food in an enjoyable atmosphere.

Frankie & Benney's****

Queen's Links Leisure Park and Union Square, Guild St, Aberdeen | Telephone 01224 590394

Consistently second to only La Bamba in the early days of this website, Frankie and Benney's is based on the theme of a New York Italian bar and diner, Frankie and Benney's offers a tempting choice of burgers, steaks, pizzas and pastas, with an American Italian flavour. The decor and style, too, are quite authentic.

The food quality has consistently been to a high standard every one of the many times we've tried it.

Pizzas - so often the give-away for restaurants which use pre-made, pre-packaged food - are a particular favourite and quite clearly freshly made. (TIP: The large pizzas are best. If there's two having pizza, ask for a large pizza to share and get them to put your choice of toppings on half each.)

Gadies****

Ryehill, Oyne, AB52 6QS | www.touchedbyscotland.com/gadies.php | Telephone 01464 851573

Just a short distance from the A96, Gadies takes its name from the river that famously runs at "the back o' Bennachie".

Gadie's offers a wide ranging menu for lunches and early evening meals. The Strathdon Blue Burger was particularly good with the strongly flavoured Strathdon Blue Cheese.

I have it on authority of an Transatlantic reviewer that the milk shakes here are the real authentic American deal. (Could be something to do with the fact that the restaurant is run by an American!)

Ghillies Lair**

Bridge of Dee, Aberdeen

Part of a national franchise chain, but with good atmosphere and you are pretty sure to find something you like on the menu.

Your comments

"The Ghillies Lair is on the Great Southern Road on the site of the former Brewers Fayre Review. Recently openened, the restaurant had a welcoming atmosphere in modern surroundings. This was perfect for the whole family with reasonably priced and something we could all choose from. The all you can eat salad cart was a big favourite and full of fresh salad. The service was quick and friendly and if you like chicken you will love the Ghillies Lair. I will definitely be coming back."

Gourmet Kama (Indian)

Bridge Street Aberdeen

City centre Indian restaurant convenient for the shops and the railway station.

Handmade Burger Co***

Union Square, Guild Street, Aberdeen | www.handmadeburger.co.uk

Traditionalists won't like this place. The tables are quite packed in to make best use of space that is costing a pretty penny in prime slots in a shopping mall. Even more horrifying, once seated and selected your burger, you go and place your order at the counter. Worse still, you pay at the same time, before you have eaten!

But, if you can stand all this breaking with tradition, you will be rewarded with pretty good burgers – something that is a real rarity in the UK (the land of the compressed reclaimed meat burger). Definitely not the place for a romantic meal to impress. But if you accept this for a fast-food restaurant that serves a really nice burger then, in our book that merits the three stars.

Howies*****

50 Chapel Street, Aberdeen | www.howies.uk.com | Telephone 01224 639500

Well known in Edinburgh and now the Aberdeen restaurant is well established. Howie's probably suffers from the fact that is does not have a "theme". But as a good, unpretentious restaurant it rates well.

Your comments

"I booked this restaurant for my fortieth birthday because I'd eaten in Howie's in Edinburgh several times and always been impressed with both the food and the service. Sadly, I was impressed by neither of these in the Aberdeen branch. Firstly, the staff seemed difficult when I was making my booking. Although the food was fresh and nicely cooked, the service was not good. Two of my guests did not receive desserts that they paid for. I had to ask for my deposit to be subtracted from the bill and, to add insult to injury, they added a ten percent service charge to the bill!"
Linz, Aberdeen - April 22, 2008

"What a find! I had dinner for the first time a few weeks ago and was amazed at what a well oiled machine this restaurant was. I was greeted with a smile and looked after all night. I waited for nothing and when the food was presented to me, it looked amazing! The wine was recommended (and no, it wasn't the most expensive bottle) and went tremendously well with our dishes and dessert was just the icing on the cake. We weren't rushed and weren't intruded upon. This restaurant has a lovely interior and looks a little more formal than it is. It even has a private dining room just off the restaurant. Perfect for my next birthday dinner. ill be back and i intend on telling as many people about this place as possible."

Hungarian Goulash Restaurant (Hungarian)****

17 Adelphi, Aberdeen | Telephone 01224 210530

Right in the heart of Aberdeen in the Adelphi, a small lane reached by a passageway through the buildings near the south side of Union Street, east of Market Street. It's a small restaurant with an informal style and excellent, friendly service. The food is superb and the beer, although not Hungarian is the excellent Budweiser (no, not the tasteless US imposter, the real Czech Budweiser Budvar).

"Very unpretentious. Great food at an excellent price. The owner reminds you of Basil Faulty. Asked him to congratulate the chef and he dragged my wife and myself into the kitchen to let us tell the chef ourselves. Family run establishment, full of fun. No frills just honest to goodness food at very reasonable prices. A place not to be missed."
John & Audrey, Fraserburgh

"Booked the table for 7pm (opening time). The restaurant was very quiet throughout the majority of our meal then started to get busy towards the end. We chose the chicken and the beef which were both melt in the mouth and very tasty. Beer is superb (Budweiser Budvar) which in my opinion is the best beer outwith Britain. Service is both quick and friendly (especially at this time). Prices are very reasonable. Whole meal took about an hour including coffee afterwards although later on at night it may take longer. We booked early to allow us to go to the cinema at 8:30pm which we made in good time. Highly recommended from someone that has eaten all around the world."

"The Donview Pub on the junction of Ellon Rd and Donmouth Road has recently been taken over by the owner of the Royal Thai in Aberdeen. Since we live in the Donmouth area we thought we would give this newly revamped pub a visit. Very pleasant to find one half is the Donview and the other half the Jade Garden restuarant. Having looked at a very extensive and mouth watering mens we decided to try the restaurant out and we were not disappointed!. It was delicious. We decided to have a set meal which included fantastic prawns and various meat dishes. We of course had the duck pancakes which was excellent, a fabulous plum sauce and the duck was cooked to perfection. It doesnt take an educated pallate to realise that all the produce used is fresh and of a high standard, exactly as you would expect from the Royal Thai!

"The surroundings having been refurbished to a high standard was lovely, very comfortable and very boutique chic looking in style. Friendly polite staff who made you feel very welcome. After our meal we went through to the bar area and decided to make a night of it. This is a lovely bar diner, family run and we will make a point of visiting again. Also there is a great take away menu so the opportunity is there if you would prefer to eat at home".

"I attended a friend's birthday gathering here last weekend, and was very pleasantly surprised by the experience. Despite the fact that there were twenty two of us, the restaurant had managed to sit us all together at one long table. We had all chosen to go with a set menu (costing around £17), and the delicious food just kept coming! Firstly, we were served prawn crackers, then large plates of mixed Chinese starters arrived. The main course consisted of a selection of different dishes, with a choice of boiled or fried rice or noodles. Staff were helpful and polite. Altogether, I felt the staff here coped well with a large gathering. The food and presentation were excellent too, and there was a huge wine list. I would definitely recommend this place for a great night out with friends!"

La Bonne Baquette***

Correction Wynd, Aberdeen

A favourite, particularly at lunchtimes, with office workers escaping for lunch or hard-pressed shoppers. La Bonne Baguette has some of the atmosphere of a French cafe and offers everything from coffee through to a full meal. Not surprisingly the favourites include baguettes, hot or cold, with a choice of fillings.

Correction Wynd is in the centre of Aberdeen, on Correction Wynd which runs below Union Street near the "Mither Kirk" (East and West St Nicholas Church).

Lahore (Pakistani)*****

145 King Street, Aberdeen AB24 5AE | www.lahore-karahi.com | 01224 647295

On King Street about a quarter of a mile north of Castlegate at the east end of Union Street, Lahore is a small restaurant and takeaway. It is totally unpretentious in terms of decor and style. Note that there is no liquor licence and the staff seemed to indicate that taking your own drink to the restaurant is not acceptable. So, this is a soft drink only restaurant. (You will also not find fresh cut flowers on your table and you are expected to use the same knife and fork for starters and mains.)

But, stop being so prim... the food in Lahore is absolutely excellent. This is not another Indian restaurant clone (the fact that Lahore is in Pakistan, not India, might be the clue!). Old favourites, when delivered to the table, look different. For example the pilau rice just looked more genuine and less artificial in colour.

The spicy flavours explode on the tongue with distinct and indiviaul notes. When you order you will be asked if you want mild, medium or hot. Be aware that I (who like hot spicy food) found the medium was very spicy. It was with the heat that Lahore made its only mistake of the night. One of our company asked for mild. Even the waiter admitted it was not mild and a complimentary sweet was offered in consolation.

La Lombarda (Italian)***

Castle Street, Aberdeen | Telephone 01224 640916

Claimed to be Britain's oldest Italian restaurant, after years of ownership by the Italian family who founded it, La Lombarda has had two sets of new owners in recent years. It has a very central location — right at the east end of Union Street, on the corner of Castlegate — making this a very easy restaurant to find.

Reasonably-priced Italian food is the speciality and it is served in a busy but pleasant atmosphere. The main part of the restaurant is a strange mix of Olde English decor and Italian cuisine, but the newer extension is more Mediterranean in style.

"I have been eating regularly in this restaurant since moving to Aberdeen 2 years ago. The menu is very extensive the last time I was there I had a Fillet Steak I must say it was cooked to perfection. I have also tried their pastas which were very tasty and reasonably priced at around £9.00. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The restaurant if very busy even during the week so I always book before going. I would go as far as saying this is the best restaurnant I have found in Aberdeen and I have eaten in quite a few."

Lairhillock Inn & Restaurant****

Netherley | www.lairhillock.co.uk | Telephone 01224 730001

The Lairhillock Inn serves outstanding bar meals in the bar, or the conservatory. This is not your average bar meal, but something a little bit better - how about venison with juniper berries?

The Lairhillock Inn is, justifiably, a very popular eatery. Sunday lunchtimes are particularly popular.

The restaurant is in a beautifully furnished building alongside the inn, with intricate woodwork and even a little minstrel gallery. The atmosphere is superb and the cuisine excellent.

To reach the Lairhillock, take the South Deeside Road from the roundabout south of the old Bridge of Dee. Turn left to Netherley beyond the Old Mill Inn and then watch for the signs to the Lairhillock.

LJ's

Schoolhill Aberdeen

LJ's is very well placed, being between the Bon Accord Shopping Centre and The Academy, which are two of the main shopping malls in Aberdeen. It is therefore a likely stopping off point for visitors to Aberdeen. Originally called Littlejohns, the place had had ups and downs over the years. Sadly it seems it is currently down.

On a recent visit we chose burger and pizza for our respective main courses. Both appeared to owe much more to mass production, plastic wrapping and freezing technology, than to any attempt to present something freshly made or even appetising. The burger appeared bo be one of those horrid packet ones where there is little or no texture to the meat and the pizza was the type of packeted stodge, laden with cheap cheese that you would avoid on your next trip to the supermarket budget foods aisle!

"We went to the lodge on the loch for dinner last saturday as a treat for my wife's birthday. I had heard from a colleague who stays in Banchory that it was a good restaurant and the views were amazing. I have to say that it lived up to our expectations on both counts. We began with starters from their regular evening menu and were both very good, but it was the next two courses that were our favourite. We both had specials which was a honey roast breast of duck with a pernod sauce for my wife and for me a tuna steak with a cirtus salsa, which we accompanied by a bottle of one of their their house wines which the waitress recomended. I have to admit that I had a small taste of my wife's meal too and can confirm that both were top class.

"We were hardly able to squeeze in a sweet, but after a 5 minute break we relented and decided that we should go for gold. I won't tell you what we had (you can find out for yourself when you go), but were very pleased to find that they were home made which makes a change from some of the places we have been in the past.

"After the meal we moved for a seat and a chat on their less formal seating area, where we managed to speak to the owner for a while, who told us about the Ospreys which visit the loch during the day and early evening. All in a all a very enjoyable evening with attentive service, absolutely beautiful food and an amazing view over the loch. By the time it had come to the end of the evening I almost forgot to pay, but even that was more than reasonable given the quality of meal and suroundings."

Small restaurant very centrally located, just off Union Street. Unpretentious, it is more cafe-style than chic restaurant. But, the meze and the main courses are very good. It's not licensed, so if you want alcohol you need to take your own – they will serve it for you for a small corkage fee.

"As far as the restaurant menu goes, I'm not really sure what they are aiming for. Sushi sits alongside tandoor dishes, traditional fish and chips, Moroccan tagines and noodle bowls! My starter of Gazpacho was excellent, whilst my partner also enjoyed his order of deep fried calamari. I wasn't so impressed, however, with my main course of Chicken Marakesh, and had to send it back as the sauce was barely lukewarm. I strongly suspect our main courses were pre-cooked and reheated, as we hadn't actually been in the restaurant for long enough for a chicken breast or fillet of lamb to be cooked through when our main courses appeared! My partner was happy with his order of Lamb Tagine, but felt the accompanying portion of cous-cous was rather small. We also had a side dish of some steamed green vegetables with garlic and soy which tasted somewhat of monosodium glutimate.

"With a nice bottle of Chillian red, our bill came to around fifty quid, which wasn't too bad. The service was good, and the waitress was very apologetic when I had to send my chicken back.

"Mim's cocktail list is much more focussed than the food menu.Their cocktails are beautifully mixed and presented with edible flowers. I would therefore recommend Mim as much more of a place to come for a drink with friends than to eat in."

"Excellent! 3 of us had lunch there, was quite busy so good atmosphere in the place, i had the home made cheeseburger (which was awesome) and my companions had the tapas and one of the daily specails ( a very generous portion of seabass) service was top notch, never had to ask for anything, the waitress was offering me a beer just as i finished my first one which got instant bonus points from me. ill def be back!

Originally a church and more recently the banana ripening warehouse for an Aberden fruit merchant, Musa's building has a lot of character. Unfortunately - at least on the ground floor - it doesn't have a lot of space. The tables are squeezed in to make space and money.

That apart, Musa has a lively atmosphere, attentive staff, good food and live music (which may not be ideal if you want a quiet intimate dinner!). We perhaps had reasonably costly tastes, but the final bill ended up being at the more expensive end of the scale.

This bistro opened on Queen's Road in Aberdeen's West End, with part of the restaurant being the old toll house for the western turnpike from the city to Alford.

Quiet, relaxed atmosphere. In a party of four, everyone was satisfied with their choice.

Don't expect your plate to be piled high with food, this is one of these welcome places that tries to please with quality not quantity. While not, perhaps, the best value food in Aberdeen, it shouldn't break the bank.

Pancho Villas (Mexican)***

15 Bon Accord Street, Aberdeen AB11 5EA | www.panchovillas.co.uk | Telephone: 01224 571377

One of the things that should mark out a good Mexican restaurant is the big crunchy home made tortilla chips. The nachos-style starter looked suspiciously like they were out of a standard packet and the slightly chewy consistency made us suspect they had been microwaved to heat them.

The lack of sizzle from the fajitas platter was a little disappointing, but the person who had them was satisfied. The Enchiladas Mole Poblano were tasty with a deep, rich bitter sweet chocolate flavour and quite a bit of spicey heat.

The menu on the food and beer front is a little restricted, but it was pleasing to note that this restaurant is not following the Transatlantic lead in ridiculous-sized portions. Ample, but not excessive. For the price we would have liked a little more evidence of freshly prepared food, rather than what we suspect is reliance on packets of tortillas and tins of refried beans.

"We were greeted by Caroline and her mum (who were the owners)and with smiles and very pleasant conversation,we talked about everyday things but they also mentioned it was local produce they use,and prefer to use including the beef, cheese etc...We were asked what we would like to drink and where would we like to sit.. Once we had found our table we ordered our meals ( I had steak to which i was asked how i would like it done...when i said medium, i was asked how 'pink' would i like it, attention to detail was amazing), and we had the most wonderful meal with such a service we have yet to find anywhere else as good. We thought at first maybe this was a one off and we returned to eat there to see. It wasn't... it was just as good as before and i am surprised to find that its rarely busy. Maybe this gem hasnt been discovered yet. In one way i hope it is, obviously for them, but in another i hope i can keep it all for myself!!

Rendezvous at Nargile (Turkish)*****

106 Forest Avenue, Aberdeen | Telephone 01224 323700

In the heart of the west end, at the junction of Union Grove and Forest Road, the old Rendezvous cafe has become Rendezvous at the Nargile.

Rendezvous at Nargile serves many of the favourites from the Nargile restaurant in Skene Street along with some new items. The restaurant area is quite small and it is perhaps inevitable that space is tight to cater for as many diners as possible. The food was excellent, but, on a detail note, the red wine was served a little too warm. On a summer evening you enjoy the evening light from the west through the big windows.

Royal Thai (Thai)****

Crown Terrace, Aberdeen | Telephone 01224 212922

A good Thai restaurant and very popular. However, for Thai food I think our favourite (by a narrow margin) was the late lamented Sawadee. It's a little bit worrying that - in their radio commercial - they used to say that "some Chinese restaurants" forget the quality of the food... and we thought it was a Thai restaurant, not a Chinese!

Rustico (Italian)*****

Union Row, Aberdeen | Telephone 01224 632111

Rustico's specialises in Southern Italian cooking, but we have a suspicion that the portions are rather larger than they would be back home!

Sometimes restaurants that are generous with the amount of food sacrifice quality for quantity. Rustico's, however, came up trumps. We might not have emptied our plates but we enjoyed what we ate!

The salamis and parma ham were succulent, the pastas were delicious and the Negroamaro wine just had to be drunk. The service was attentive, at a pace to suit a leisurely meal and the atmosphere was friendly and nicely informal.

Sam's Hua Zhong Xing (Chinese)*****

King Street, Aberdeen | Telephone 01224 626233

Sam's is an excellent Chinese restaurant with superb food, a really sophisticated atmosphere, attentive, friendly service and good house wine. What more could you want? How about the fact that the restaurant is a supporter of the Grampian Heart Campaign for healthier eating... and that is important!

Banquets for two and are excellent and good value. One thing I'm not too keen on is that service is now added at 10% - I'd rather see that as being something you give because of good service.

There's even the occasional tinkling of the ivories to add to the atmosphere, although being a grand piano it can make conversation a little strained.

Sam's is central, easy to find (just head to the "far east" end of Union Street and turn left onto King Street and it's about 100 yards on the left)

When attempting to enquire as to why the main course was taking so long, I was told by the manager that I had no idea how long it takes to cook Chinese food. Although my father is Chinese and I have lived in Hong Kong for 4 years, as well as being an accomplished chef. Overall I believe Sam's restaurant was poor value for money, the food left much to be desired."

My husband and I have been there numerous times (as have a lot of friends and family on our reccomendation) and have always had a fantastic meal, lovely fresh flavours, meat, fish and vegetables cooked to perfection and very friendly staff, particularly the owner Sam who is always happy to chat about how proud he is of the quality of local produce they always use in the restuarant. Silver Darlings (Seafood)*****

Pocra Quay, Aberdeen | Telephone 01224 576229

This is deservedly acclaimed as one of of Aberdeen's top restaurants. Located right on the quayside at the entrance to Aberdeen Harbour, the restaurant is now in a glass-sided extension on top of the original building. Let's be clear, this a restaurant where quality, not quantity, is king. If you want generous portions, don't go to Silver Darlings. This place is about finesse.

You now ascend a spiral staircase to dining room where you can watch the vessels plying in and out of the harbour. The panoramic view of the beach and the harbour makes this a particularly special place - especially for a summer evening as the sun sets over the harbour.

The menu is strong on seafood. But, there are alternatives for landlubbers. Outstanding food, full of flavour and superbly presented.

Starters and mains were admirably presented, and the preparation was to our liking. Tiger prawn and scallops, followed by halibut and monkfish. Dessert was the poached peach and creme brulee. In all, it was pleasurable dining experience. The Silver Darling is quite pricey, but worth the effort."

"The food was superb, but the whole dining experience was seriously let down by the service. We had to ask for menus, repeatedly ask for and remind waiters about drinks. The restaurant was very cold because the front door kept blowing open. Despite highlighting this early on, nothing was done and we remained cold throughout the meal."

Simpsons Hotel

Queen's Road, Aberdeen |Telephone 01224 327777

Located on Aberdeen's Queen's Road Simpsons Hotel aims to create a little of the Mediterranean style behind a traditional Aberdeen west-end granite facade. It is now under new ownership.

The restaurant is reached by a stairway down from the Bistro and is a dramatic hall, setting with artificial palm trees.

The food is imaginative and well presented in a sophisticated style with the emphasis on quality not quantity. As a hotel, this is also a good place for a stylish breakfast, or lunch.

"Having dined at Simpsons over 2 years I booked for what I thought was to be very pleasant lunch only for us to seated at small uncomfortable chairs, at an extremely small table, which was in turn surrounded by other small tables to obviously cram as many diners into one small area as possible. So tightly in fact that we could hardly get out! It was also difficult for the staff to serve. I feel the food is now overpriced and the decor throughout is now showing its age and in need of attention. We will not be using Simpsons again in the foreseeable future."
Ron, Aberdeen – December 17, 2009

"Our visit in March 2008 was not pleasant. This restaurant has become expensive (£17-£30 for mains) and I thought the food quality was poor. I don't think the meal was as described on the menu and when we complained that it was overcooked, the message from the kitchen was that 'pheasant is a dry bird'. Two drinks served in dirty glasses had to be changed."

Soul

Union Street, Aberdeen

In the old Langstane Kirk at the junction of Union Street and Bon-Accord Street, Soul has kept some of the features of the church, putting in a floor at the old church balcony level. The original features include the stained glass windows and the pulpit.

Downstairs is a bar that serves food, with a more modern area, based on the old church halls, on Langstane Place. Upstairs is a casino.

"Had a crackin nite in there started around 7ish a load of us met up and had some dinner, i had the noodles with duck, was well nice. place was already quite busy but food came in good time, stayed there for ages after dinner just drinking then headedinto town, went back there about 3 am to the casino upstairs and had breakfast!! nothing like a full cooked breakfast at 3 in the mornin after a big night on the town. the best bit was i went home that night with over £500 more than what i came out with!!! bring on the roulette!! if only the good lookin barmaid came home with me to."
Andy G, Aberdeen - August 16, 2007

"I went to Soul restuarant and bar with friends and the whole night was a let down. I ordered a large glass of wine and received a glass from the waitress and saw a poster that said: 'Buy 2 large glasses of wine and get the rest of the bottle free'. When the waitress came back I said "if I order another glass will I get the rest of the bottle" she replied "yes". The second glass arrived brought by the general manager he refused to give me the rest of the bottle as he said I didn't buy the 2 glasses at the same time. Later the waitress brought 2 deserts we ordered which were not as described on the menu. I had to seek out the manager as their descriptions of food and drink were not as ordered."

Soul & Spice (African)

Belmont Street, Aberdeen

African cuisine. On Thursday's you used to be able to barter - African market style - for the price of your meal! Not sure if you still can.

The Stage Door****

North Silver Street |Telephone 01224 642111

An old theatre, then more recently a cinema, the Stage Door is on North Silver Street. A little off the beaten track, it is nevertheless still right in the heart of the city and particularly handy for His Majesty's Theatre, just a couple of hundred yards away.

The restaurant has a slightly different style during the week and at weekends when it is more upbeat, often with live music such as a Jazz band.

"Cold plates and overcooked flavourless meat were matched with raw veg and watery pathetic sauces. Ingredients did not even match the menu descriptions and the level of incompetence was mind blowing. They managed to make pan fried duck look like poached chicken!!! It was dire - the one saving grace being the manager who was perfectly polite and understanding as I refused to pay or eat their food before leaving.

TGI Fridays

Beach Esplanade, Aberdeen

The good news is that the decor and atmosphere are interesting and the service - almost OTT in the American style - is attentive but informal. The bad news is that the food has proven to be disappointing.

The hamburgers and steaks are a pretty safe choice. But the other food (again in the American style) has been consistently disappointing.
In the case of fajitas, the lack of the customary sizzling hot platter suggests that the food is pre-prepared and kept lukewarm. This impression is heightened by the fact that the fajitas have come with a dollop of unappetising, mushy, soggy onions, in the place of the crisp, crunchy vegetables one expects. And yes, we did give them a second and third chance, but with the same lukewarm soggy results each time!

Experience so far says it is not up to the standard of TGI Fridays in the USA... not by a LONG shot.

Your comments

"When ordering our meal we had to clarify three times which was the starter and which was the main course. Our two courses then arrived at the same time. We did ask for the main course to be taken away to be kept hot. Well they did half of that, it came back cold!

Tiger Tiger***

Shiprow, Aberdeen

Tiger Tiger is on Shiprow, the road round the back of the Atheneum opposite the Town House.

There is a restaurant on the first floor. The food and the service is more sophisticated than the minimalist table decor might suggest. On the ground floor is a bar with big low sofas and chairs, while downstairs is the night club.

"Fantastic Movie Meal Deal offer - for £9.99 we got a main meal and cinema ticket for the cinema next door! Great value for money!"
Dave, Scotland - 16 May 2009

"I have passed Tiger Tiger so often and embarrassed to say that this weekend was the first time we had eaten at TT, however, it won’t be the last. I didn’t realise it took children - it was child friendly, however, found that out too. The staff are excellent, very friendly and couldn’t do enough for us – the lamb, steak and chicken burgers were excellent. We cleared out plates."
Andrea, Aberdeen – 11 May 2009

"Having visited Tiger Tiger's chic restaurant many times over the years I'm glad to say the standard of the food and service has never failed to impress! The restaurant has a lively, youthful atmosphere and the menu extensive but reasonably priced.

"The staff have always been attentive and go the extra mile to make sure whether you\'re in for a quick lunch or dinner you always feel looked after. Would definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone!

The Tunnels,

Carnegie's Brae, Aberdeen

Your comments

"The Tunnels has always had an excellent reputation for live music and club nights, but it has now added top notch diner to its accolades! Bistro style food is served up within the hip Tunnels atmosphere, and, surprisingly, it's amazing! Lot's of veggie options and a few unusual dishes. Definitely not your usual run of the mill pub grub.Worth a visit any day of the week."

A favourite eatery on the Ythan Estuary at Newburgh. Dinners and weekend lunches are particularly good.

Widely credited with the revival of Sticky Toffee Pudding as a favourite sweet.

Via Roma (Italian)

High Street, Inverurie

"After reading the previous comments, As a regular customer of Via Roma I felt It is my duty to put my opinion about the
restaurant. We had a party on friday night in via roma to celebrate my friend's 30th birthday. I have to say we had a fantastic time, The staff were all helpful, the food was superb, we all had a complimentary liqeurs. All together was a fantastic night-out. I have also booked a table for my own birthday. Excellent value for money. honest food and service, down to earth staff. simply 10 out of 10! may i take this opportunity to thank the management and the staff of Via Roma."
Gazz, Kintore - March 19, 2007

"The food is good but not outstanding. I also feel it is on the expensive side compared to other Italian Restaurants. The service is sometimes slow and on one occasion we ended up with someone elses bill which was more than double our own. Luckily we checked it before we paid!
I also sent in a booking via email and this was not acted upon. As I work in Inverurie this is the choice of colleagues for staff night's out. I would prefer to eat at the Italian restaurant in my home town of Ellon!"
Little Mum, Ellon - March 4, 2007

"Our experience of Via Roma started badly and got worse! Upon arriving the waiting staff/ manager seemed to have lost our reservation and shepherded us to a corridor of the restaurant where we had no choice but to look on at the other diners! Once seated our party of 6 agreed the menu sounded delicious. The service, however, was non existent. We waited 25 minutes for our drinks! The food itself was great. Our evening was ruined totally by the manager of the night taking great exception to us commenting on some of the problems we experienced.

Yangste River (Chinese)**

Bridge Street, Aberdeen

The Yangste River is one of the original Chinese Restaurants in Aberdeen, having opened in 1964.

The food and the style therefore harks back to the era when Scots had to be encouraged, by familiar restaurant styles and formats, to try the novel idea of Chinese food. That includes serving soup in soup dishes, food on flat plates with knives and forks and offering dishes that will appeal to non-adventurous palates. Chicken Maryland and chips anyone?

The only time we've been there recently was when a little boy in our company insisted that - while we could eat something different - all he wanted was chips!

Yatai (Japanese)

56-60 Langstane Place, Aberdeen AB11 6EN | www.yatai.co.uk | Telephone 01224 212500

"I think Linz should get her facts* straight regarding the booking times for this restaurant. The sittings are at 6pm and 8.30pm and are as so for a reason As you may have noticed, the restaurant can only seat between 16 and 22 people at any one time. If they restaurant did not operate in this system then the tables would not be turned over and the business would struggle to make a profit.
"Unlike many city eateries, Yatai import a huge amount of their ingredients and drinks which comes at a high cost. The quality of food and service is second to none and it's just unfortunate that optimising your customer count is seen as a negative thing by someone who presumes that this small business has become caught up in itself.
"I doubt you'll be missed as a customer as the place IS always packed and most of these guests are those who realise that such a small operation invites it's customers to book well in advance to ensure they get the dining time they want. It's a shame you wrote this gem of a place off over something so petty."
Felicity, Aberdeen - February 10, 2009

*EDITOR'S NOTE: To be fair, it appears Linz did "get her facts straight". Her point was that Yatai now operate a 'sittings' system and you have just confirmed that is the case. The merits and justification for this system are opinion, not "fact".

"It's the same old story...Last year we were very excited about Yatai: proper Japanese food served in peaceful surroundings by knowledgable staff. It was bound to happen though: success has gone to their heads, and now they refuse to take bookings for the 'usual' times when people would head out for dinner. Instead, they have a 'sittings' system now. You can only book a table for 6.30 or 9p.m., even on a mid-week night. If they are able to fill tables from 6.30p.m. on a Wednesday night, right through until they close, then good luck to them. I, for one, prefer not to be dictated to about what time I can book a table for. If I feel like Japanese food now, I've found that a good alternative is to buy from the excellent Sushi stall downstairs in the market, next to Nickel and Dime (where you will see your dishes being prepared as you wait and is actually up to the same standard as Yatai) and dine at home at a time to suit myself."
Linz, Aberdeen - May 23, 2008

"Fantastic restaurant. The food was outstanding and the service was great too. We ordered the 'sample menu' which was selection of various different dishes on the menu as we were unsure of what to order. If you are not a fan of sushi (raw fish)then there are plenty of delicous cooked dishes on the menu to choose from. The restaurant also has an open kitchen so the staff arent hiding behind any closed doors!

"This was my first experience of an authentic Japanese restaurant and the waitress was extremely helpful in explaining what each dish was and how to use the various culinary utensils! This is a very small restaurant with no more than six tables therefore booking is essential. Prices are reasonable for the quality of food."

Sophisticated Chinese restaurant with a bit of an emphasis on seafood. But there's plenty on the menu to suit landlubbers.

"We were seated and had our food order taken within 5 mins. The waitress arrived 15 minutes later with our main course. The manager noticed 5 minutes later that we had not started eating and asked if there was a problem. I advised that we were yet to receive our starters, he apologised and had the waitress take our main course away. She returned 5 minutes later with 2 starters, one of which was not as ordered. I advised her of this and she said she would put this right. Ten minutes later she returned with the correct started and removed the incorrect starter from our table. Needless to say, the original correct starter was now cold. Now with our starters on the table, some 40 minutes after being seated, I had to ask the waitress to take our drinks order!!! The service improved after this and once the correct food arrived, the food was of a good quality. We were offered a token gesture of a free drink to appologise for the service. The quality of food was impressive however the service badly lets Yu down!!!"

"What was once one of the premier Chinese restaurants in Aberdeen has allowed itself to trade on his old reputation. The menu is still extensive but the food is bland. It is not a cheap restaurant and would expect far higher quality."
