| These are some of our recommendations for single malt whiskies. Some prefer to sip them neat, possibly after a meal. Others prefer to add a small amount of good Scottish water and swear that this brings out the full flavour. |
| The Balvenie
Balvenie is an excellent malt with a distinctive aroma and sweet aftertaste. Produced using the fresh mountain water of the Robbie Dhubh with grain dried and smoked at the distillery in Dufftown. Produces a distinctive necklace of bubbles around the glass when poured neat.
|
| Dalwhinnie
Dalwhinnie is less peaty than many Highland malt whiskies, with a lighter taste and a heather honey aftertaste.

Glendronach
"Glendronach 18-year old is a huge malt which rivals the greats. 100% sherry casks and at 18 years old - possibly the smoothest and fullest flavoured of anything you will ever taste. It's not easy to find nowadays - be prepared to pay £35, but it'll be money well spent. Totally kicks the butt of Macallan!"

| Glenfarclas
Glenfarclas is one of the great Speyside malt whiskies near Ballindalloch. Rich, full of character and flavour. Good visitor centre!
|
| Glenfiddich
Glenfiddich is one of the best known malts around the world, produced in Dufftown just beside the Balvenie distillery. Light and delicate peat, a good malt for beginners.
|
| Glenkinchie
Sometimes the peat flavour in Highland, island and Speyside malt whiskies can be a bit over-powering. If you are not so keen on that element, try Glenkinchie, a lowland single malt - it has the classic single malt flavour but without the pungent "peat reek".

The Glenlivet
The Glenlivet is a first-class malt with a delicate fruity aroma.

Glenglassaugh 1975 28 years old
"This numbered malt is only available in Parkers, Low Street, Banf and is the best by a long way of the not-too-exciting 'Glassas'. It reminds me of sitting ont he beach betweenSandend and the distillery (now closed) when the surf's up and the smell of salt, grass, sand and something lemony hits the senses. This is not cheap, but play your cards right and Mr Parker will give you a taste."

|

An Islay (pronounced Isle-ah) malt to graduate to, Lagavulin will probably become a favourite with malt whisky lovers. Robust flavour, quite smokey and pungent. Definite aftertaste of the sea, which laps the island distillery.
|
| Laphroig PRONOUNCED LA-FROYG
One of the best known Islay (pronounced Isle-ah) whiskies, with a peaty flavour and a touch of sweatness. You can also taste a little of the sea flavour, from its island location.
|
| The Macallan
The Macallan is silky with a smooth aroma and a subtle sherry taste from maturation in sherry casks. Amazing that this outstanding whisky used only to be used to make blended whiskies!
|
Royal Lochnagar
PRONOUNCED LOCH-NAH-GAHR
Royal Lochnagar distillery is in the shadow of Balmoral Castle on Royal Deeside, a full bodied malt whisky with a delicate sweetness.
